Description

Lagoon Nebula and friends

The Lagoon nebula in Sagittarius is a vast star forming region and a gigantic interstellar cloud of gas and dust, It lies at an estimated distance of 5,000 light years away from Earth.
The Lagoon, like many nebulae, also contains a number of Bok globules (dark, collapsing clouds of proto stellar material). Near the center of the Lagoon, the open star cluster (NGC6530), which contains thousands of blue young stars, is also prominent within the nebula.

On the right hand side of the image there are more beautiful gems of Sagittarius, NGC6559, IC1274 and IC4685
